A Model Is Only Worth What the Site Crew Can Build From It

Coordination  ◆  documentation  ◆  electrical design

I came to BIM from electrical design rather than from drafting, which means I read a model the way the engineer intended it and the way the installer will meet it. Interpreting engineering intent from markups and design direction is the part of the job I am strongest at.

Most of the work is unglamorous. The duct that runs through the tray route, the panel with no clearance, the riser landing in a column. I raise those in coordination meetings and in writing, early, rather than modelling around them and letting the crew discover the problem on site.

The rest is documentation discipline. Families, shared parameters, annotation standards and revision control, so model accuracy holds and the drawing set stays trustworthy through every issue.

IranMall was designed to IEC. Since moving to Victoria I have produced construction documentation for Canadian projects at AES Engineering. Codes change between one country and the next; the discipline of a drawing set that reads the same way on every sheet does not.

Iran Grand Shopping Mall

Kayson Inc.  ◆  Tehran
BIM Coordinator and Electrical Expert

One of the largest commercial complexes in the world at 1.6 million square metres. Electrical, mechanical and plumbing run through one shared ceiling void here, colour separated by system. Every crossing visible is a conflict that was found and resolved in the model rather than on site.

The complex was designed to IEC, with drawing sets, shop drawings and as built models issued across its residential and commercial areas over five years.

Electrical Modelling

Conduit routed with real fittings rather than placeholder lines, coordinated against structure and ramp geometry. Modelled this way, the quantity take off and the clash report both come straight out of the model with no manual reconciliation.

BIM Modeler, Electrical and Mechanical

Electrical and mechanical layouts for a mission critical facility. Segregated power and data sharing a tray run, bundled and dressed. Fill percentages and separation distances are settled at the model stage, because by the time anyone is on a ladder the space either works or it does not.

BIM Modeler, Mechanical and Electrical

The plant room carried supply, return and fire ducting around chillers, pumps and headers. I delivered the coordinated mechanical and electrical models and supported clash detection in exactly the sort of congested space where electrical either coordinates early or gets rerouted on site.

Recommendations held on LinkedIn

Behnam worked with me on two high rise projects, Sepehr Elahieh and Moghadas Ardebeli. His recommendation credits me with developing and coordinating the detailed BIM models on both, keeping electrical integrated with architecture, structure and mechanical, and notes that the parametric families, coordination and clash detection reduced errors and rework during construction.

Elle worked alongside me on IranMall at Kayson. She describes the electrical systems I developed across power, lighting, fire alarm and low voltage circuits, the Revit models and clash detection behind them, and the coordination that kept electrical aligned with the other disciplines across the complex.
